The rise of the rapid distribution and exhibition changes driven by the challenge of global screening services like Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney+, Hulu and their deep pocketed impact provided the background for the 2020 Berlinale. Their role in the funding of film productions and national as well as global distribution had already been passionately discussed during the last two Berlinales before the 70th edition took place from February 20 to March 1, 2020 under the new management of director Carlo Chatrion and executive director Mariette Rissenbeek. Former director Dieter Kosslick handled both positions during his festival reign. As I noted two weeks ago in my filmfestivals.com farewell to Kosslick, this year’s Berlinale edition continued to expand, though fewer films were in the festival program. Both the film festival and the European Film Market programs seemed to have met the expectations of the public and the professional audience.
However, the consequences of the coronavirus pandemic though leading only to few Berlinale cancellations have had a fundamental impact on film productions, channels of film distribution, viewing habits and the staging of film festivals. Barely two months have passed and virtually all film festivals have been cancelled for summer 2020 and early fall fest have been canceled, postponed, or adapted to digital streaming selections from their programs. Most also face serious financial problems. It may very well be that the 2020 Berlinale and its market component was the last major public film festival. Though dates have been set for the 2021 Berlinale, like most other film festivals there is a general uncertainty about what kind of programs will be offered next year and to which extent digital streaming versions will be incorporated or replace the festivals. In the United States there are various suggested scenarios; in a widely discussed proposal a new major film festival has been suggested with the best selections from existing ones like Cannes, Venice, Berlin, Toronto and others. This new festival is supposed to be funded by Netflix. With its deep pockets and flexibility vis a vis the film industry Netflix could afford to do so but has not responded to date. Already firmly established is the WE ARE ONE project. This new global film festival is organized and produced by Tribeca Enterprises and will be streamed on YouTube for ten days from May 29-June 7. The digital festival program is free and covers the spectrum of films, documentaries, shorts and material from other media. Programs are selected by the more than 20 participating film festivals including Berlin, Cannes, Venice, Sundance, Toronto The New York Film Festival, and Tribeca....

Having studied Contemporary History at Leiden University (Netherlands) and at the Royal Netherlands Institute in Rome (Italy), Dutch-born Matthijs Wouter Knol worked as a freelance journalist and in film production, specializing in documentary films. He then worked for the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA), was programme manager of Berlinale Talents for six years and, since 2014, has been Director of the European Film Market. He will remain in this position at the Berlinale with all responsibilities until he will join the EFA team in November 2020 to prepare his taking on full responsibility as EFA Director from Marion Döring in January 2021.
Marion Döring, who will retire from her current position as EFA Director, has been connected to the history of the European Film Academy since its very beginnings in 1988: first as PR manager of the European Film Awards, later as project manager for the Academy’s activities and publications, and since 1996 as the Academy’s director. She says: “I’ve known Matthijs and followed his work closely for many years from his time at the Berlinale Talents until his achievements as Director of the European Film Market. His profound professional expertise, his personality and his energy are the ideal combination to lead EFA into a new era. Leaving the Academy in his hands feels like a perfect accomplishment of my work for EFA.”...MORE

Access to films and documentaries covering health and other issues has been problematic for the Chinese audience. The introduction of digital platforms outside of theaters and film festivals offer a viewing medium that is not subject to uniform political censorship. As changes in the management of principal state organizations covering radio, film, television and print media have shown, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has taken a stronger and more directive role. In some cases, if the message of an issue-oriented production syncs with policies which are being adopted there is no censorship problem. In other cases, initial approval may be withheld on short notice if there is a powerful supportive response by the audience that challenges apparent policy failures. Filmmakers can circumvent the authorities by producing a film without prior permission. They do so by using direct contact with their target audience and share their productions through digital streaming platforms....MORE

The documentary film «THE MYSTERY OF A BURYAT LAMA», directed by Elena Demidova, tells a story of one of the most famous lamas, Pandido Khambo Lama Dashi Dorzho Itigelov. His body is recognized as one of the sacred Buddhist objects of Russia and is being kept in the Ivolginsky Datsan. The Buddhist monks approach him as a living person.
Itigelov was born in 1852 and began his religious education at the age of sixteen years. In 1911, he was appointed the twelfth Pandido Khambo Lama as the Head of Russian Buryat Buddhists. Between 1913 and 1917, Itigelov was prominent in the spiritual life of Russian Empire. He took part in the Tercentenary celebrations of the House Romanov and opened first Buddhist temple in St. Petersburg. During First World War Itigelov presided over the society of "Buryat brothers", an organization helping the Russian army. After October Revolution, Itigelov resigned as head of the Buddhists. In 1927, aged seventy-five years, he asked other lamas to begin meditation ceremonies and funeral rites, since he said he was about to die. Itigelov left a testament asking to be buried as he was at the time of his death, sitting in lotus posture. On September 11, 2002, Itigelov's body was eventually exhumed in the presence of the leaders of the Buddhist Traditional Sangha of Russia and transferred to Ivolginsky Datsan.

"A film that Google does not want you to see - filmfestivals.com Best for Fest"
An eye-opening documentary, The Creepy Line reveals the stunning degree to which society is manipulated by Google and Facebook and blows the lid off the remarkably subtle – hence powerful – manner in which they do it.
The Creepy Line is a title culled from the words of former Google CEO Eric Schmidt, when during a 2010 interview he explained Google’s code of conduct: “The Google policy on a lot of things is to get right up to the creepy line and not cross it.”
However, as Dr. Robert Epstein explains in the film, “Google crosses the creepy line every day”.
Offering first-hand accounts, scientific experiments and detailed analysis, The Creepy Line examines what is at risk when these two tech titans have free reign to utilize the public’s most private and personal data to manipulate society.
There is no question that the “creepy line” is getting ever-creepier, and that the tech giants have crossed it.

The rise of the rapid distribution and exhibition changes driven by the challenge of global screening services like Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney+, Hulu and their deep pocketed impact provided the background for the 2020 Berlinale. Their role in the funding of film productions and national as well as global distribution had already been passionately discussed during the last two Berlinales before the 70th edition took place from February 20 to March 1, 2020 under...
