Overview of the US business for the week of June 8 Honoring Kathleen Kennedy for her birthday

Screendollars Newsletter for the week of June 8th.

Our Notable Industry News continues to explore the many aspects of how the film industry is planning for its re-opening. Last week, NATO announced that it expects 90% of US cinemas to be open and operating on July 17th, when Warner Bros.' Tenet hits theatres. A story from BoxofficePro reports on the renewed emphasis by theatres to rent their auditoriums to private parties, as a way for small groups to enjoy the movies and celebrate special events at the theatre, in a way that is quasi-public, and carefully managed. Last week, the Cannes Film Festival announced its Cannes 2020 Official Selections.  These films and filmmakers can tout themselves as Cannes selections when they screen at partner film festivals later in the year.

This week's Gower Street column tracks the net deficit in Global Box Office over the first five months of 2020.  The January through May 2020 has produced $6B in Global Box Office, compared an average of $17.1B for the same period from 2017-2019.   As cinemas have now begun to re-open in many global markets and US states, Gower predicts that this year-over-year deficit will level off in the months ahead.

In the Hollywood Report, Martin Grove relates the likely return of travelers to airports to the equally likely return of movie goers to cinemas. The film industry is ready to entertain movie lovers with its packed calendar of new releases, just as the airline industry is ready to fly frustrated vacationers and business travelers to destinations around the world.

We conclude with our film data tables: a week-by-week list of major film releases through the end of 2020, the latest studio release changes, MPAA's film ratings, a list of notable films premiering on VOD, Virtual Cinema and Streaming platforms. We also list the notable new trailers that studios released on-line this week.
