The seventh film of Japanese director Makoto Shinkai, Suzume, made waves when it was first released as Suzume no Tojimari in Japan, then the rest of the world. Shinkai, who first began his career as a video game animator, previously found massive success with the release of the animated movie Your Name, which, when it came out in 2016, was one of the highest-grossing anime movies of all time, beating out the beloved Studio Ghibli movies that had also found success worldwide to claim the top spot in 2019. Suzume, which is his seventh movie, would become the fourth highest-grossing animated film of all time even before it was released in the West, taking in $256 million just from Asia alone.
