A shattered mother struggles to cope with her 17-year-old son's murder of three classmates. Eric LaRue, the feature directorial debut of Hollywood stalwart Michael Shannon, is a wildly uneven exploration of a horrific tragedy's aftermath. Superb lead performances from Judy Greer and an unrecognizable Alexander Skarsgård are marred by a questionable focus on religious extremism. Gut-wrenching scenes of confrontation and blame lose steam with fanatic supporting characters who dilute the narrative's realism. The awful frequency of school massacres stain societal consciousness with innocent blood. Those left to pick up the pieces have scars that will never heal. The film is distressingly accurate in that regard.
