David Oyelowo transforms from an escaped slave to achieving the nascent career of a legendary US Marshall in Lawmen: Bass Reeves, which premiered with a two-part opener that often feels like a Wikipedia narrative. This isn't necessarily a bad thing as the series wants to get through the introductory exposition quickly. Reeves captured thousands of criminals as an unparalleled tracker with crack shot firearm skills. His journey from oppression to the badge could have been more detailed but doesn't hold back from portraying the ugliness of racial subjugation. There's welcome comeuppance when Reeves gets his first taste of justice.
