First and foremost, Menus-Plaisirs — Les Troisgros is the apotheosis of food on film. No culinary documentary, baking show, cooking competition, or instructional TV series can compete; Jiro dreams of a movie this good. For four hypnotic hours, viewers are treated to a study and celebration of ingredients, from cows and goats to cheese and wine and the soil itself. We see how one restaurant creates its menu, finds its ingredients, cooks its food, and serves and explains it all to people in the dining room. Yes, Menus-Plaisirs — Les Troisgros is not for everyone; it requires patience and commitment, but if you think it sounds banal, you will undoubtedly be surprised by the flawless execution. This is a perfect film.
